Following lengthy and tumultuous Council debate on October 23 and failing test vote\u00a0(3-6)\u00a0on minor amendment, Council President Hans Reimer\u00a0– seeing insufficient support among Councilmembers to pass proposed ZTA – hurriedly gaveled\u00a0lunch adjournment\u00a0without\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>calling for final vote as previously scheduled.\u00a0 Upon returning from lunch break, Mr. Reimer stated intent to\u00a0possibly<\/em> reschedule\u00a0vote <\/strong>at next Council meeting on Tuesday, October 30, but he\u00a0was not certain<\/u>…<\/p>\n

Our sincere thanks to\u00a0Council members who\u00a0voted FOR residents’\u00a0yesterday\u00a0including\u00a0Tom Hucker<\/strong>,\u00a0Roger Berliner,<\/strong>\u00a0Sidney Katz<\/strong>,\u00a0Marc Elrich<\/strong>,\u00a0Nancy Navarro<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0George Leventhal\u00a0<\/strong>by approving first of what would have been several possible amendments, and especially to Tom Hucker<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Roger Berliner<\/strong>\u00a0for their strong leadership and advocacy on behalf of residents’ concerns.<\/p>\n

Hans Reimer, Nancy Floreen and Craig Rice were opposed<\/u><\/em> <\/strong>to resident friendly amendment(s).<\/p>\n

As an important footnote, Mr. Leventhal pushed stridently for cloture as he expressed strong desire get a ZTA 18-11 passed and to let fundamental issues\u00a0be tested in Court – NOT more time spent debating.<\/p>\n

However, we emphasize that this is just a delay.<\/strong>\u00a0 ZTA 18-11 is still “in play.”<\/p>\n

Council President may bring this final vote!!\u00a0\u00a0We believe County Executive Leggett and his Staff will\u00a0pull out all the stops<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the next week to get this passed.<\/p>\n

By state law, Montgomery County Council\u00a0must<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0act on all land use matters such as this proposed zoning text amendment\u00a0no later than<\/em>\u00a0Wednesday, October 31, 2018 – as thereafter Council is “Lame Duck Session” awaiting outcome of November 6 General Election and subsequent seating of new Council.<\/p>\n
